The garden

Created in 1994 at the request of Prince Rainier III, the 7,000 m² garden lies between the Grimaldi Forum and the sea, on the edge of Larvotto and Mareterra. It was designed by the Japanese landscape architect Yasuo Beppu, winner of the Grand Prix at the 1990 Osaka flower show, and the site was blessed in 1992, before work began, by a Shinto high priest of the Dazaifu shrine in Fukuoka.

The timber, the lanterns and the tiles of the small pavilions came from Japan; the plants are mostly Mediterranean, shaped for three years by Beppu before they were planted. Information panels beside each notable feature give the origin of its materials and plants and explain Japanese traditions. The garden regularly hosts exhibitions of Japanese art and culture.
